Washington Redskins release WR Devery Henderson

Devery Henderson has been released by the Redskins, leaving the veteran deep threat without a home after being left to pasture by New Orleans.

Devery Henderson has been released by the Washington Redskins, the team announced Wednesday via Twitter. Henderson joined the Redskins in the offseason, after the Saints allowed the wideout to leave via free agency. Now Henderson is once again looking for a new team.

Henderson built a reputation as a deep ball specialist during his long stint in New Orleans. He averaged more than 20 yards per reception for three straight seasons from 2006-2008. That average gradually declined over his final four seasons with the Saints, however, and last year he had just 22 receptions for 316 yards and one touchdown in 15 games played.

Henderson was considered a bubble player for a spot on the Redskins’ final 53-man roster out of training camp. The Redskins also added Donte’ Stallworth this offseason to give the team yet another veteran once-great deep threat. If the two players were competing directly with each other, then Stallworth apparently won the battle, though he isn’t guaranteed a spot on the Redskins’ roster, either, given the team’s depth.

Redskins blog Hogs Haven predicts that Pierre Garcon, Josh Morgan, Santana Moss, Aldrick Robinson and Leonard Hankerson will be the only receivers retained, and broke down the Henderson/Stallworth situation thusly:

At this point, it still looks like the Redskins will only keep five receivers. Donte Stallworth and Devery Henderson could make that push, but Henderson continues to struggle with getting separation in camp, and it's difficult for coaches to carry a sixth receiver who can't block or play special teams. Stallworth can do both of these, but he's been battling a hamstring injury and has seen his action become limited.
