Clinton Portis joins concussions lawsuit against NFL

Former All-Pro running back has become the latest high-profile former player to sue the NFL over head injuries.

Geoff Burke-US PRESSWIRE

Former Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis and 82 others filed a lawsuit against the NFL over head injuries, according to the Washington Times. Portis and the others join over 4,500 former players suing the league.

Portis is named as the lead plaintiff in an 83-player lawsuit filed on Tuesday, claiming that he suffers from headaches and is "at heightened risk of developing further adverse neurological symptoms in the future." The lawsuit also claims that the NFL didn't do enough to prevent head injuries and didn't properly educate players on the long-term impact. Quarterback Daunte Culpepper and running back Cadillac Williams are also named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

Portis believes he suffered more than 10 concussions in his playing career, and would often go back into the game after missing just one play. From CBS Sports:

“It was just the way things were at the time. I’d get hit hard and be woozy. I’d be dizzy. I’d take a play off and then go back in. Sometimes when I went back into the game, I still couldn’t see straight. This happened all the time. Sometimes once or twice a game.”

Portis rushed for 9,923 yards and 75 touchdowns in his nine-year career with the Redskins and Denver Broncos.
