Geno Smith has ‘brutal’ practice, says Rex Ryan

Rex Ryan says Smith had his worst practice yet, and he may end up missing Saturday’s preseason game with the ankle injury.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith is still dealing with an ankle injury that continues to limit him in practice. Things came to a head on Wednesday, when the rookie had his worst practice yet, throwing four interceptions.

Head coach Rex Ryan called Smith's practice "brutal," and hinted that he might not play in Saturday's preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. From the New York Daily News:

“It was brutal. It was Geno’s worst day. I think, and obviously, the ankle’s part of it, but ... way too many picks and things. Did not look comfortable today,” Ryan said. “Obviously he has to come back from it, he will come back from it. It was a bad day. Everybody, we’ve seen it, guys have bad days. But this was a really bad day for Geno.”

Smith injured his ankle in last week's opener against the Detroit Lions. He hasn't missed any practice time, but Ryan doesn't believe he is 100 percent. If Smith can't play Saturday, Mark Sanchez would get the start, though Matt Simms and Greg McElroy have a chance to get more playing time.
