Tom Brady injury: Patriots Super Bowl odds drop

People have already started to act like Tom Brady’s practice injury is a bad one. The Pats’ odds to win the 2014 Super Bowl have already taken a dive.

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Update: Tom Brady reportedly has a “low-grade knee sprain” and has been called “day-to-day.” Maybe those odds will improve again.

Even though we don't yet know the extent of Tom Brady's injury, there's panic in New England: the Patriots Super Bowl odds have already taken a dive to account for the potential loss of the team's all-everything quarterback, as noticed by Will Brinson of CBS Sports.

The Pats were 7-1 to bring home the Lombardi Trophy this year, per Sportsbook.com, one of just three teams paying under 10-1. However, they’ve been dropped to 12-1 -- still good, considering Brady might not be hurt at all, but a sign that this could be very concerning.

For their part, Bovada has temporarily removed all lines related to the Super Bowl, AFC Championship and AFC East. If history repeats itself, this is the smart move. Brady, a two-time MVP, has been the Pats' full-time starter every year since winning the Super Bowl in 2001, and the team has won the AFC East in nine of the last 10 seasons. The lone holdout? 2008, when Brady tore his ACL and MCL in the season's first game. The team was still good that year, winning 11 games, with a defense that allowed just 19.3 points per game and Matt Cassel throwing for 3,693 yards. But they didn't make the playoffs in a franchise where Super Bowl appearances are commonplace, and there's no evidence Ryan Mallett is as capable a fill-in as Cassel. (There is distinct evidence third-stringer Tim Tebow is not as good as Cassel.)
