Patriots release WR Michael Jenkins, according to report

New England has sent home a veteran in Jenkins who was looking to be a threat for Tom Brady.

Hannah Foslien

The New England Patriots have released wide receiver Michael Jenkins, according to Adam Schefter.

Jenkins, 31, came to the Patriots during this offseason on a one-year, $840,000 contract without guaranteed money in the deal. With the exodus of Brandon Lloyd and unproven players on the roster at the receiver position, it was thought Jenkins might be able to snag a spot.

In his nine-year career, Jenkins previously played the last two seasons for the Minnesota Vikings and the first seven with the Atlanta Falcons. His best year was 2008 when he amassed 777 yards and a trio of touchdowns on 50 receptions. Overall, Jenkins scored 25 touchdowns in the NFL.

With the release of Jenkins, New England is left with a nucleus of Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola, two small slot receivers. Currently, there is nobody of note on the roster who has succeeded at playing on the outside.
