Arian Foster injury: Texans RB could return to practice Monday

Arian Foster could return as soon as Monday from nagging calf and back injuries.

Arian Foster could be back at practice by Monday, Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak told John McClain of the Houston Chronicle on Thursday. Foster is recovering from a strained calf injury he suffered during offseason training activities this past May, as well as dealing with an issue with his back. He is currently on the team's physically unable to perform list, though he can be activated at any time during training camp without penalty.

Heading into the 2013 regular season, there shouldn't be any concerns about his health, barring any setbacks. The Texans' season opener on Sept. 9 against the San Diego Chargers is over three weeks away at this point. If cleared by coaches, Foster has a chance to participate in the Texans third and fourth preseason games against the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys, respectively.

While Foster sits, Ben Tate will operate as the Texans' de facto No. 1 running back. Tate suffered a groin injury early in training camp and did record a carry in the team's preseason opener, but has returned to practice and could make in appearance when the Texans play the Miami Dolphins on Saturday.

Last season, Foster dominated the carries for the Texans, rushing 351 times for 1,424 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also recorded 40 receptions for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Tate had 65 carries for 279 yards and two touchdowns as the team’s third-leading rusher.
