Bryce Brown injury: Eagles RB has injured quadriceps, still in line to be backup

Bryce Brown missed the Eagles’ preseason win over the Panthers on Thursday, but is still leading the competition for the backup role behind LeSean McCoy.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Bryce Brown sat out Thursday's preseason game with a quadriceps injury, but he is still the favorite to be the Philadelphia Eagles' backup at running back behind LeSean McCoy, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Brown is trying to edge out Chris Polk, who rushed five times for 24 yards against the Carolina Panthers but gave up a costly fumble while the Eagles were driving in the second quarter.

Polk will have another chance to cut into Brown's carries when the Eagles play their third preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday, Aug. 24. Brown may be back by then, however, giving Polk fewer touches and fewer opportunities to shine.

According to Mike Kaye of the Eagles blog Bleeding Green Nation, Polk still has a ways to go to match Brown’s level of play:

Chris Polk is nice but he’s not Bryce Brown good. Polk has been one of the featured stories at training camp and he had some solid runs in last night’s contest. However, it doesn’t seem like he has gained ground on Brown, who missed the game due to an injury. On Vick’s first drive, Polk coughed up the ball to kill what was an impressive series for the offense. He finished with five carries for 24 yards and a catch for nine yards.

Brown had his own fumble issues last season. He rushed for 178 yards and 169 yards in Weeks 12 and 13, respectively, but also turned the ball over three times over that span. Still, those games highlighted Brown’s potential to be a game changer, which is something that Polk has yet to flash.
