Bears search for 3rd QB after Matt Blanchard breaks knuckle

Could JaMarcus Russell finally get his second chance?

Ezra Shaw

Chicago Bears third-string quarterback Matt Blanchard fractured a knuckle in Thursday night's 33-28 win over the Chargers. Blanchard's injury has apparently forced the Bears to start looking for a new No. 3 quarterback, according to Michael C. Wright of ESPN Chicago.

Wright mentions former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell, Jordan Palmer and Trent Edwards as possibilities to fill the Bears' void. The Bears worked out all three of those quarterbacks during the offseason.

Blanchard, an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin-Whitewater, suffered the injury in the third quarter of the team’s second preseason game.

The folks over at Windy City Gridiron, SB Nation's Chicago Bears blog, are reasonably concerned about the injury. The believe that it could take some time to heal, which is a problem considering Jay Cutler has not been the most durable quarterback in recent years.

Whoever the Bears sign this week could end up hanging around for a while. And Bears fans know all too well the significance of their backup quarterbacks.

Finding a third quarterback isn’t the worst problem for an NFL team to have, but the Bears will be crossing their fingers that Cutler stays healthy this season.

UPDATE: The Bears have signed Jordan Palmer to replace Blanchard, according to Ian Rapoport.
