The San Francisco 49ers bested the Kansas City Chiefs in preseason action on Friday, 15-13. The 49ers were trailing by four through the first three quarters, but fourth-string quarterback B.J. Daniels came through to hit Chuck Jacobs for a 14-yard touchdown with under three minutes to go in the game to provide the winning margin.
49ers vs. Chiefs results: B.J. Daniels throws late touchdown, San Francisco wins, 15-13
A late score gave San Francisco a road win over Kansas City.
Alex Smith completed 7 of 16 passes for 62 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He was never going to get that much playing time, even if the hyped-up storyline was about his first game against the team that drafted him. San Francisco starter Colin Kaepernick played just a couple snaps before heading to the sidelines, and technically had negative yardage.
49ers starting running back Frank Gore had two carries for 54 yards before calling it a day. It was actually a rush of two yards and a 52-yard scamper early in the game. Jewel Hampton got a lot of playing time behind him with 19 carries, but he only picked up 33 yards.
Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles did not start due to an injury. It's considered a minor injury, and Andy Reid was adamant that Charles would have started if this were a regular season game, but gave him the day off to get healthy. Chase Daniel was a perfect 6-of-6 in relief of Smith for Kansas City.
