NFL news: Doug Martin leaves game, Tom Brady is doing fine

Doug Martin was injured, Tom Brady isn’t injured and more you may have missed from Friday.

J. Meric

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin left Friday's game against the New England Patriots with an apparent head injury. Martin took a knee to the helmet while in pass protection and was tended to briefly on the sideline, before leaving for the locker room. He didn't return to the game, but there is no word on the severity of the injury to this point.

Here’s what else you might have missed from Friday:

Brady doing just fine

Tom Brady played on Friday and looked good, so the concerns about his minor knee injury are totally unfounded. Brady completed 11 of 12 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown, including a 26-yard scoring strike to Danny Amendola. He completed his first nine pass attempts of the game.

RGIII to start Week 1

The Washington Redskins are planning to start quarterback Robert Griffin III in Week 1 of the regular season. General manager Bruce Allen confirmed the news on Friday, saying that Griffin is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn ACL and that there have been no setbacks this offseason. He's been practicing for some time now and should hit the ground running.

Alexander waived/injured by San Diego

The San Diego Chargers waived/injured wide receiver Danario Alexander on Friday. He can be claimed by another team, but he's got an ACL injury and will miss the season, and will hit free agency after this season. Thus, it makes no sense for him to be claimed, and it's likely he'll end up on injured reserve before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Orakpo day-to-day with injury

Redskins outside linebacker Brian Orakpo was held out of practice Friday with a thigh bruise. He's listed as day-to-day. It seems unlikely that the Redskins would risk playing him Monday against the Pittsburgh Steelers given that he's the team's top pass rusher.
