San Diego Chargers wide receiver Eddie Royal suffered a scare during Saturday's practice that resulted in the sixth-year veteran being taken to the hospital in the back of an ambulance, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Royal suffered a bruised lung, per Adam Caplan of the NFL Network.

After the practice, Chargers head coach Mike McCoy addressed the media regarding the injury (via Chargers.com):

“Eddie obviously went up for a ball, caught the ball, landed on his back and (had) shortness of breath and a little bit of a hard time breathing. So we’re going to take him to the hospital and check him out. That’s all I’ve got right now. I can’t tell you anymore. I don’t know a whole lot about it other than that.”

Caplan reported the other than the bruised lung, all other tests on Royal came back negative.

Royal, 27, is entering his second season with the Chargers after he signed a three-year deal in 2012 worth $13.5 million. He was drafted in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos and played four seasons with the team.

In 67 career games, Royal has tallied 229 career receptions for 2,341 yards with 10 touchdowns. He also has experience as a punt returner and has a career average of 11.1 yards per punt return, including two touchdowns.
