Derek Wolfe injury: Broncos DE carted off after helmet-to-helmet hit

Wolfe had movement in both his arms and legs but is being evaluated for a spinal injury.

Denver Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe had to be taken off the field in an ambulance Saturday night after taking a helmet-to-helmet shot in the first quarter of the team's preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Wolfe is being evaluated for a cervical spine injury but has movement in all his extremities, the Broncos reported on Twitter.

The injury happened on the Seahawks' first drive of the series. Luke Wilson cut down Wolfe on a running play near the Denver goal line. Wolfe attempted to regain his footing, but fullback Michael Robinson hit Wolfe as the defensive end lifted his head up.

Wolfe stayed down after the hit, and the trainers came out and placed him on a backboard. The ambulance came on to the field, and Wolfe left the game in the ambulance.

The lineman is entering his second season in the NFL. Wolfe recorded six sacks last season, helping Von Miller put pressure on the quarterback. Miller had kind words for Wolfe before training camp began, telling Gray Caldwell of DenverBroncos.com:

“Derek Wolfe had an amazing rookie year. I think everybody knew he was destined to be (a leader) right when we first brought him in. He’s just a worker. His sophomore year, I think he’s going to have an amazing year. You can just tell by the way he’s working on the field. It’s hard to go against him. I’m all for him.”

Wolfe entered Saturday as Denver’s starting left defensive end.
