NFL news roundup: Dustin Keller, Blaine Gabbert and Derek Wolfe injured

Dustin Keller suffered a knee injury, Blaine Gabbert sprained his thumb and more you may have missed from Saturday.

Scott Halleran

Miami Dolphins tight end Dustin Keller left Saturday's preseason game against the Houston Texans with an apparent knee injury. Keller took D.J. Swearinger's helmet to his knee and couldn't put weight on it. He had to be carted off to the locker room and though there's no official word on his injury or its severity, it definitely looked pretty bad. He was set to have an MRI Saturday night, according to ESPN's Adam Shefter.

Here’s what else you might have missed from Saturday:

Derek Wolfe hospitalized after head-to-head hit

Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe was taken to an area hospital in Seattle after suffering a head-to-head hit during a game against the Seahawks. Wolfe was being evaluated for a cervical spine injury, but was able to move both his arms and feet, the Broncos reported on Twitter.

Blaine Gabbert sprains thumb

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert sprained his thumb on his throwing hand in the team's preseason game against the New York Jets on Saturday. The team reported after the game X-rays were negative. Gabbert played well before leaving the game, however, completing 13 of 16 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown. If his injury isn't serious, it seems likely he'll be named the starter ahead of Chad Henne going forward, as he has been more impressive. But the severity of the injury isn't yet known.

Redskins deny RGIII report

There was a report Dr. James Andrews told the Washington Redskins that Robert Griffin III should not play before the sixth week of this coming season, but on Saturday, the Redskins refuted this report. The Redskins said that the report wasn't true, and the team still plans to start Griffin in Week 1. They open the season against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 9.

Royal suffers bruised lung

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Eddie Royal suffered a bruised lung on Saturday, and had to be taken from practice to the hospital in an ambulance. Royal went up for a pass and landed on his back, and was suffering from shortness of breath . It's unclear how severe the injury is at this point, but it's scary stuff, and bad news for the Chargers, who are already very short on receivers.

Detroit signs Mathis to contract

The Detroit Lions signed cornerback Rashean Mathis to a one-year contract on Saturday. Mathis played 10 seasons with the Jaguars, but hit free agency as the Jaguars are trying to get younger at key positions. He is healthy and did see some action visiting teams earlier in free agency. The Lions desperately needed secondary help.
