San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Sunday that quarterback B.J. Daniels will get increased practice reps this week, putting him on an even level with Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien.
B.J. Daniels to get increased practice reps this week
The 49ers are giving B.J. Daniels every chance to win the backup QB job, giving him more practice reps this week.

Colin Kaepernick is entrenched as the starting quarterback, but the 49ers are still trying to sort out the backup position. Daniels completed 6 of 9 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Meanwhile, McCoy and Tolzien combined for six completions on 14 attempts for 65 yards and an interception. Neither quarterback has thrown a touchdown in the preseason yet.
A seventh-round pick out of South Florida, Daniels is an adept runner who can also contribute on special teams. He may not make it as a passer in the NFL, but his athleticism could give him an advantage in a 49ers offense tailor-made for Kaepernick’s dual-threat ability. This position battle may not be decided until the final roster cuts at the end of preseason.
