NFL news roundup: Arian Foster, Kendall Wright injured; Bears sign Trent Edwards

Injuries and roster cuts are the biggest news items as the regular season approaches.

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

The Bengals have shown off their team depth in the first two preseason games, winning both exhibition games by a combined 32 points. So on Sunday, when Cincinnati made a couple of cuts from its roster, the rest of the league likely took notice.

Linebacker Aaron Maybin, wide receiver Tyrone Goard and cornerback Troy Stoudermire were released on Sunday. Maybin has struggled since being drafted in the first round of the 2009 draft, but Goard and Stoudermire both have potential as undrafted rookie free agents.

With the Bengals’ success at finding quality prospects late in drafts, NFL teams will be doing their homework on the three newest available players.

Here’s some more news you may have missed on Sunday.

Arian Foster still out with back soreness

Arian Foster has not yet practiced with the Texans this training camp while battling through calf and back injuries. Well, the back injury is still hampering him, because Foster won't practice on Monday, despite coach Gary Kubiak being hopeful that he would be able to go.

Bears sign quarterback Trent Edwards

After rookie quarterback Matt Blanchard broke his knuckle in the Bears' second preseason game, the team signed a pair of quarterbacks. First, on Friday, the team inked Jordan Palmer to a contract. On Sunday, Chicago announced the signing of Trent Edwards. The Bears now have four healthy quarterbacks on the depth chart.

Kendall Wright has knee sprain, not tear

Titans wide receiver Kendall Wright said he was worried about the knee injury he suffered during Saturday's game. Luckily for Wright, he received good news on Sunday. The former Baylor standout has a knee sprain, rather than a tear. The injury will keep him out for the rest of the preseason, but Wright has a chance to play in the regular season opener.

Mario Manningham will start season on PUP

The 49ers wide receiver depth chart has suddenly become thin. A.J. Jenkins, a 2012 first-round pick, has been a massive disappointment. Michael Crabtree will be out for most of the season with an Achilles injury. On Sunday, news broke that Mario Manningham will start the season on the PUP list. Anquan Boldin just got even more valuable for San Francisco.
