Blaine Gabbert named Jaguars starting quarterback despite fractured thumb

Jacksonville has tabbed its third-year QB as the lead man for Week 1.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have named Blaine Gabbert their starting quarterback over veteran Chad Henne despite being sidelined for the rest of preseason with a fractured thumb, according to Big Cat Country.

Gabbert outplayed Henne in the preseason, with the turning point likely coming in the game against the New York Jets. The third-year Missouri product looked solid, completing 13 of 16 pass attempts for 165 yards and a touchdown before exiting with a thumb injury. It was later reported that Gabbert would miss the final weeks of the preseason with a hairline fracture in his thumb.

Henne came in to replace Gabbert and had a rough time, going 4 of 10 for 30 yards and tossing an interception. Gabbert has certainly had his issues throughout his young career, although in fairness he hasn’t had ideal situations. This year will mark the third head coach for Gabbert in as many years, going from Jack Del Rio to Mike Mularkey to Gus Bradley.

Last season, Gabbert played in 10 games and only threw for 1,662 yards while completing 58.3 percent of his throws, up markedly from his rookie season number of 50.8 percent.
