Browns OC Norv Turner ‘happy’ with Josh Gordon

Cleveland’s new offensive coordinator is feeling good about one of his pupils.

The Cleveland Browns are looking to make the climb out of the AFC North basement in 2013, something that largely will be dependent on how much the offense improves from ranking 24th in points scored.

A key player in this hoped revival is wide receiver Josh Gordon, who offensive coordinator Norv Turner is feeling good about despite Gordon's looming two-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Turner doesn’t believe some of the criticism labeling Gordon as loafing is fair, and took direct aim at the word in the piece:

“I don’t think it’s fair to use that word if you don’t know what we’re doing,” Turner said. “It does make for a good article and it does get whoever wrote it some good attention, but I don’t think it’s fair without really digging in and saying, ‘What were you doing? What were you trying to accomplish in that drill? Why wasn’t this going on?’ You don’t know the medical situation and all of that. I’m happy with what Josh is doing.”

Gordon was drafted before last season in the supplemental draft out of Baylor University and played well, hauling in 50 catches for 805 yards and five touchdowns. Paired with Greg Little, the duo will be the primary downfield weapons for quarterback Brandon Weeden under Turner's attacking scheme.

Turner believes in the Don Coryell way of offense, which means a deep route written into every play with intermediate and short routes under it. The quarterback is meant to read his progression from deep to short, giving Little and especially the speedster Gordon ample opportunities to make big plays.
