49ers trade A.J. Jenkins to Chiefs for Jon Baldwin

The 49ers and Chiefs have swapped wide receivers just before the start of the 2013 season. A.J. Jenkins will head to Kansas City after just one year in San Francisco, in exchange for Jon Baldwin.

The San Francisco 49ers have traded A.J. Jenkins to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for Jon Baldwin, according to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star. The wide receiver swap comes just less than three weeks until the start of the 2013 NFL season.

Neither player has yet to live up to the expectations of being a former first-round draft pick, though they are both young. Jenkins appeared in just three games as a rookie for the 49ers last season, and failed to record a reception. Baldwin has had a rocky two seasons in the NFL. His rookie year began with a locker room fight with Thomas Jones. Last year, he was the Chiefs’ fourth-leading receiver with 20 receptions for 325 yards and one touchdown in 15 games played.

With the Chiefs, Jenkins -- 6'0, 200 pounds -- brings a dimension of athleticism that Baldwin doesn't possess, and could serve as a better complement to Dwayne Bowe as a result. Baldwin's bigger frame -- 6'4, 230 pounds -- gives the 49ers another strong intermediate threat alongside Anquan Boldin, who was acquired from the Baltimore Ravens this offseason.

Chiefs general manager John Dorsey has already commented on the trade. Via the Chiefs’ official site:

“We felt like this trade was beneficial for all parties involved,” Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey said. “A.J. is a talented individual with a skillset that we feel can add value to our football team. Jon Baldwin is a hardworking player and a professional. We wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
