Seneca Wallace released by New Orleans Saints

Seneca Wallace has been released by the Saints after signing on in April to back up Drew Brees.

The New Orleans Saints have released backup quarterback Seneca Wallace, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Wallace was signed in April to give the Saints' depth behind starter Drew Brees. He has apparently lost out to Luke McCown and undrafted rookie free agent Ryan Griffin for the right to remain on the depth chart.

Wallace struggled in his only preseason appearance this year. Last Friday, he went just 3-for-6 passing for 32 yards and an interception against the Oakland Raiders. McCown's lone appearance this preseason was an 18-for-28 performance for 216 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. Griffin is a combined 9-for-15 for 96 yards through two games.

Wallace built a reputation as a solid backup quarterback during his seven-year stint with the Seattle Seahawks. He played admirably often filling in for an injured Matt Hasselbeck. The best game Wallace's career was arguably in 2008 during a Week 14 bout against the New England Patriots. Wallace went 20-for-28 passing for 212 yards and three touchdown during the 24-21 loss.

Wallace was traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2010 and started several games that year in place of an injured Jake Delhomme. He also took over the Browns' offense late in the 2011 season, though the team ended the year on a six-game losing streak. Wallace has yet to throw a regular season pass since.
