Mohamed Massaquoi released by Jaguars

Mohamed Massaquoi has been released by the Jaguars after just four months with the team.

USA TODAY Sports

Mohamed Massaquoi has been by the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team announced Monday afternoon. Massaquoi was signed during the offseason to help deal with the loss of Justin Blackmon as he serves out a four-game suspension to start the 2013 season.

According to Alfie Crow of the Jaguars blog Big Cat Country, the release doesn’t come as much of a shock. Massaquoi apparently failed to impress during training camp. The timing of the release is somewhat surprising, however, with two more preseason games still to play.

Massaquoi will hit the free agent market in hopes of latching on elsewhere. He spent his first four seasons with the Cleveland Browns, where his numbers steadily declined every year. He recorded a career-best 624 yards receiving with three touchdowns off 34 receptions as a rookie in 2009. Last year, Massaquoi appeared in just nine games due to hamstring and knee injuries and finished with 17 receptions for 254 yards and zero touchdowns.

Until Blackmon is able to return from suspension, the Jaguars appear set to deploy Cecil Shorts III, Mike Brown, Jordan Shipley and rookie Ace Sanders in the receiving corps.
