Cortez Allen injury: Steelers CB has ‘minor’ knee surgery

The cornerback hadn’t practiced since Saturday due to knee discomfort.

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cortez Allen had "minor" knee surgery Friday morning, the team announced on Twitter. He hadn't practiced since Saturday due to "knee discomfort" in his right knee, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Dispatch.

Allen will miss at least a couple of weeks, head coach Mike Tomlin said in a written statement, but no specific timeline was given for his recovery.

The 24-year-old Allen started three games last season, but was expected to replace Keenan Lewis in the starting lineup after Lewis signed with the New Orleans Saints this offseason. Allen had 55 tackles, three forced fumbles and two interceptions last season after being with the Steelers since they selected him in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

William Gay, who played for the Arizona Cardinals last season and signed a free-agent deal with Pittsburgh in the offseason, is expected to slip into Allen's spot until he returns. Gay played for the Steelers from 2007-11 before starting 15 games for the Cardinals last year.
