Antonio Smith suspension: Texans DE will appeal

Smith will appeal his suspension, claiming he wasn’t attempting to hit Richie Incognito when he swung his helmet at him.

Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

After being suspended for the remainder of the preseason and the season opener, Texans defensive end Antonio Smith said he will appeal the suspension and that he didn't try to hit Richie Incognito with his helmet, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

Despite the video, Smith said he restrained himself and while he swung the helmet in Incognito’s direction, he didn’t try to hit him with it. The Texans believe the helmet didn’t make contact with Incognito’s face, according to a report from Pro Football Talk.

Smith and Incognito have a history dating back to last season when Smith was fined $21,000 for kicking Incognito. The fine was reduced to $11,000 following an appeal. The two got into it once again during Week 2 of the preseason when Smith ripped off Incognito's helmet and swung it back at him, possibly hitting him in the face.

Smith said his biggest disappointment is not being able to help his team and he will now appeal the suspension.

“Anybody would in this situation,” Smith said, via McClain. “I want to state my case.”

If Smith is suspended for Week 1, he will lose more than $352,000 in salary.
