Le’Veon Bell injury: Steelers RB could be out ‘for awhile’

Pittsburgh may have to make due without Le’Veon Bell, whose foot injury may keep him out of the lineup.

Le'Veon Bell appears to have avoided a Lisfranc injury, but a foot sprain could still keep the rookie running back off the field for a significant amount of time, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette.

According to Bouchette Bell's injury isn't as serious as the Lisfranc injury Pittsburgh tight end Matt Spaeth suffered earlier this preseason. Still, a foot sprain can be a hindrance for a running back and could put Bell's status for the season-opener in question.

Bell, a second-round pick, is projected to start for the Steelers. If the injury does keep him out of regular season games, the Steelers would likely rely on a combination of Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer to carry the load. Bell suffered the injury during Monday night's preseason game against the Washington Redskins. He carried the ball four times for nine yards before leaving with what was initially diagnosed as a mid-foot sprain.

Injuries have been an issue for Bell in training camp, and he has already missed one preseason game due to a knee injury. When he does return, there will be some question of how the injury will impact his effectiveness, especially for an elusive runner like Bell. According to ESPN, Bell led all power-conference running backs with 921 yards after contact last season.
