Richard Marshall released by Miami

In a surprise move, the Dolphins released one of their top cornerbacks.

Despite being listed as a starter on their depth chart, cornerback Richard Marshall was released by the Dolphins on Tuesday, according to a report from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

Marshall’s contract likely figured into the decision to release him. He was owed $4.55 million in base salary this season. According to Florio, the Dolphins attempted to trade Marshall, but were unable to find a team willing to take on the remaining two years of his contract. Marshall signed with Miami in 2012, inking a three-year deal worth $16 million.

Although he appeared in just four games during his first season with the Dolphins due to a back injury, Marshall was projected to start for Miami this year. The report from Pro Football Talk indicates Miami may be interested in re-signing Marshall at a lower price. The 28-year-old should draw other interest on the free agent market, especially from teams lacking cornerback depth.

If Marshall doesn't return, the Dolphins may rely on rookie second-round pick Jamar Taylor. Taylor missed parts of the offseason due to sports hernia surgery. Dimitri Patterson is also a candidate to transition into a starting role.

Marshall, a second-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, is entering his eighth NFL season. He spent six seasons in Carolina followed by one season in Arizona and one season with the Dolphins. He's experienced, with 59 career starts.
