NFL news: Jairus Byrd signs tender, Miami released Richard Marshall

Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd signed his tender, the Miami Dolphins released cornerback Richard Marshall and more you may have missed from Saturday.

Kevin Hoffman-US PRESSWIRE

Safety Jairus Byrd signed his franchise tender with the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday and will report to the team. Byrd has sat out all of the team's offseason activities to this point. Byrd was hoping to sign a long-term contract, but it didn't materialize. He has been one of the best safeties in football in recent years, and his return is a big boost for the Bills.

Here’s what else you might have missed on Tuesday:

Miami releases Marshall

The Miami Dolphins released cornerback Richard Marshall on Tuesday, in something of a surprise move. Marshall was listed as a starter on the team's depth chart and most projected him to be one of the top two corners this season. That said, he's owed $4.55 million this year and it's likely the Dolphins weren't able to get him to renegotiate his deal, despite him only playing in four games last season.

As noted at The Phinsider, nobody is quite sure why the move was made at this point:

A good question to ask is what prompted the Dolphins to make this move. Marshall had been getting starting reps in games, but split time with Patterson on the first team. Reports from today’s practice said that Marshall got reps at safety, usually not a good sign for a cornerback. They didn’t need the cap room to sign a player. Was Marshall simply regressing? Are the coaches comfortable enough with the rookies to let Marshall go? The Dolphins will be forced to trim the roster down to 75 players in a few days, and it appears they have already started with this move.

Bell may be “out for awhile”

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell could miss a significant amount of time with a foot sprain. Bell, a rookie, avoided the dreaded Lisfranc injury, but he will still likely miss the preseason and could miss longer. He's in line to be the starter at running back this year. It's unclear just how much time will be missed at this point.

Cleveland voids Moffitt trade

The Cleveland Browns voided the John Moffitt trade on Tuesday, sending him back to the Seattle Seahawks due to injury concerns. Moffitt had actually made it to Browns practice when the team made the move. When the Seahawks got control of him again, they immediately sent him to the Denver Broncos in exchange for defensive tackle Sealver Siliga.

Arizona signs Thomas

The Arizona Cardinals signed free agent wide receiver Mike Thomas on Tuesday. Thomas was released by the Detroit Lions on Monday. Thomas will compete for a role in the slot with the Cardinals, who continue to search for receiver help outside of Larry Fitzgerald. Thomas has been productive in the past, but he's dropped off in recent years. This is his shot at a comeback.
