John Riggins among former players suing NFL Films

Ten former players have opted out of a proposed settlement between NFL Films and the players whose images they used.

Retired players continue to fight for compensation from the NFL's continued usage of their image. Five Hall of Fame players, led by former Washington Redskins running back John Riggins, have joined a lawsuit suing NFL Films.

This stems from a suit pressed by Rams and Giants defensive end Fred Dryer, whose legal battle SB Nation reported on last week. After suing NFL Films in 2009, the league proposed a settlement accepted by a federal court that would put money into a fund for retired players and charities promoting initiatives for their welfare.

Dryer believes that instead of funneling cash through charities he claims are “dry wells,” that money should go straight to the players. At least ten other players are joining him, including some of the cream of the crop:

In addition to Riggins, the list of Hall-of-Famers includes Chiefs lineman Curley Culp -- just inducted last month -- Vikings lineman Ron Yary, Raiders tight end Dave Casper, and Rams lineman Tom Mack. Other notables include Pro Bowl quarterbacks Roman Gabriel and Joe Kapp.

Players have until Aug. 30 to opt out of the settlement. If enough players do, courts could reconsider the initial settlement.
