Tarell Brown’s agent negotiates with 49ers over voided $2 million clause

Brown lost $2 million thanks to an oversight by his now-former agent. His new agent is negotiating with the 49ers to see if the cornerback can make some of that $2 million back.

Tarell Brown is still trying to recoup at least a portion of the $2 million he inadvertently voided in his contract by not participating in the San Francisco 49ers' offseason training program, ESPN.com reports. Brown is letting his new agent, Joel Segal, handle negotiations with the front office while the cornerback's focus is on training camp and the upcoming season. Brown fired his previous agent, Brian Overstreet, because of the snafu.

Late in July, Brown said he found out over Twitter that he missed out on the $2 million escalator in his contract. Brown typically works out on his own in Texas while the 49ers run their voluntary offseason program, but indicated that he would have been in California if he had known about the escalator. He is currently due to make $925,000 in base salary this season, down from the $2.925 million he would have made if he participated in the offseason program.

Brown appears to have some support within the 49ers’ organization. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said that he hopes that a deal can be worked out. Whether Brown will be fully compensated remains to be seen, however.

Brown will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2013 season. David Fucillo of 49ers blog Niners Nation suspects that current negotiations could ultimately tie into a long-term contract extension:

I think we can make a strong argument that Tarell Brown was the team's most consistent cornerback last season. It is hard to tell what his value will be like on the open market, but given that the 49ers had not worked out a deal yet, they would seem content to wait and see as well. Sometimes guys end up back in town when the market isn't too their liking, but as we've seen with Dashon Goldson, Delanie Walker, Josh Morgan and several others, sometimes the market takes care of them just fine.
