David Diehl injury: Giants OL out 6 weeks after thumb surgery

Diehl will miss six weeks to undergo thumb surgery, forcing the Giants to reshuffle their offensive line yet again.

New York Giants offensive lineman David Diehl will miss six weeks to undergo surgery to repair an unstable right thumb, the team announced Wednesday. Diehl had practiced with a cast on his thumb Tuesday, and said that he would be "all right" after practice. An MRI revealed that surgery is necessary, however.

Diehl's impact as a starting lineman has been in decline, according to Giants blog Big Blue View, but his loss for a significant chunk of the regular season could put the Giants in a bind for depth. The team was already without center David Baas, who is currently trying to make his way back from an MCL injury.

Diehl has only recently been playing left guard after being shifted over from right tackle while Kevin Boothe filled in for Baas at center. Boothe could shift back to left guard in place of Diehl, allowing Jim Cordle to start at center. The Giants may also promote second-year guard Brandon Mosley into the starting lineup, according to Big Blue View.

Diehl's absence may ensure extensive playing time for first-round draft pick Justin Pugh, whose versatility should come in handy. Pugh had been practicing at right tackle with the first-team offense since Baas' injury. Prior to that Pugh had been taking reps as the Giants' second-team left tackle.
