Sean Lee, Cowboys agree to 6-year extension

The Cowboys have committed to Sean Lee as their middle linebacker of the future, signing fourth-year MLB to a six-year extension Wednesday.

Tim Heitman-US PRESSWIRE

Sean Lee has agreed to a six-year extension with the Dallas Cowboys worth $42 million, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. The inside linebacker's contract include escalators that could bump him up to $8.5 million per season. Lee was in the last year of a rookie contract that will pay him $630,000 in base salary this season.

With a $7 million base salary, Lee will be one of the highest paid inside linebackers in the NFL. According to Spotrac.com, only David Harris of the New York Jets is currently making more money on an annual basis.

Lee’s role in the Cowboys’ defense is expected to increase this season with the team switching to a 4-3 defensive scheme under new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. Lee’s success in Rob Ryan’s 3-4 scheme should bode well for greater responsibility this upcoming season.

Of course, Lee’s success will depend on him staying healthy. He was placed on injured reserve in October last season due to a toe injury. Lee was productive in just six games played, recording 58 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception.
