49ers sign QB Seneca Wallace

With Colt McCoy perhaps losing a grip on the backup job behind Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco signed a recently released veteran to compete for relief snaps.

The 49ers signed veteran quarterback Seneca Wallace on Thursday, according to their official website. Wallace, 33, was released by the Saints earlier this week after a poor preseason outing against the Raiders. San Francisco is looking for additional depth at the quarterback position with backup Colt McCoy not standing out against the other QBs in camp.

Wallace has not played in an NFL game since 2011, when he made three starts for the Cleveland Browns, completing just 51.4 percent of his passes that season. He was released by the Browns before the 2012 season and was out of the league last year. The Saints signed him to compete against Luke McCown to back up Drew Brees, but Wallace lost that competition. He'll now enter one with the 49ers.

San Francisco thought it was getting a high-quality backup when it traded for McCoy from the Browns for draft picks, but he has been getting equal reps against Scott Tolzien and B.J. Daniels. In the 49ers' second preseason game against the Chiefs, McCoy was just 3-of-6 for 35 yards and an interception, while Daniels was 6-of-9 for 72 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions.

Now Wallace will also be taking away reps in practice from McCoy as the competition to back up Colin Kaepernick gets a little more heated.

In a corresponding move, the 49ers released wide receiver Ricardo Lockette.
