Jets sign former No. 2 overall pick Jason Smith

After being released by the Saints earlier this week, Smith has returned to the Big Apple.

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Jets have announced the signing of offensive tackle Jason Smith, marking the former second-overall pick's second go-around with the team.

Smith joined the Jets after a trade from the St. Louis Rams last summer, playing primarily as a swing tackle and an extra tight end in the team's jumbo package. He was ultimately unable to hold on to that roster spot, but he'll get another opportunity under new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. He'll need to make a strong impression over the next couple of weeks to stay on the team, though, considering how he's fallen out of favor in past years.

Smith was selected in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Rams, getting picked up right behind Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. He arrived in New York as part of the Wayne Hunter trade, but was eventually cut in February. Smith eventually signed with the New Orleans Saints in April, but was released by the Saints earlier this week.
