Jets activate Santonio Holmes from PUP list

In a sign he could possibly be ready for the season opener, Santonio Holmes was activated from the PUP list.

Ronald Martinez

The New York Jets activated wide receiver Santonio Holmes from the physically unable to perform list on Friday, per the team's official website.

The 29-year-old Holmes missed all of training camp as he continues to rehab the Lisfranc injury he suffered in Week 4 of last season. There was some speculation Holmes could miss the first few weeks of the season, but being elevated to the active roster is a good sign he’ll be ready sooner, rather than later.

The timing of the move may not be a coincidence either. Some people around the Jets thought Holmes was possibly milking the injury to avoid participating in training camp, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post. New York wrapped training camp on Thursday. Holmes was medically cleared earlier this week, but told the Jets he wasn’t ready to start practicing yet.

Regardless, Holmes is active now and will begin working toward being ready for Week 1. Holmes was running routes on Thursday, something he said he was unable to due because of pain on Wednesday, per Costello. The Jets open the season Sept. 8 against Tampa Bay, giving Holmes more than two weeks to prepare. If he hadn’t been activated from the PUP list, he would have been required to sit out the first six games of the regular season.
