Nnamdi Asomugha likely to make 49ers roster

There were doubts early on, but now it appears Asomugha can rest easier about making the final roster in San Francisco.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Veteran defensive back Nnamdi Asomugha is in good shape to make the 49ers' roster and could end up winning a starting job, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. Asomugha signed a one-year contract with San Francisco in April, but it isn't guaranteed, meaning he won't be paid any of it if he does not make the team.

Not long ago, Asomugha’s standing with the 49ers was considerably more questionable. He began camp on the roster bubble, and about a week and a half ago, he was buried on the depth chart at corner, no higher than No. 4 at that position. But he played well in San Francisco’s preseason game against Kansas City on Aug. 16, which likely helped to improve his stock.

The 10-year veteran has been a regular starter in the NFL since 2005, and he has always been durable, never missing more than two games in a season. He was a three-time Pro Bowler in Oakland, where he spent the first eight years of his career.
