Chargers plan to use Danny Woodhead like Darren Sproles

The Chargers envision free agent signee Danny Woodhead playing the same role that Darren Sproles did during his final years with the team.

The San Diego Chargers expect to use running back Danny Woodhead in a role close to what Darren Sproles did during his time with the team. Woodhead will be making his preseason debut Saturday after missing the first two games with an injury.

Woodhead signed with the Chargers in the offsseason after spending three years with the New England Patriots. Last season he set a career high in receptions, catching 40 passes for 446 yards and three touchdowns. He added 301 yards and four touchdowns in the running game.

Woodhead is expected to play a change-of-pace role in San Diego, replacing Ryan Mathews on third downs, and in two minute situations. The Chargers think he's a more natural rusher than Sproles, one that can line up in both the slot and backfield.

Sproles caught 59 passes in 2010, his last year with the Chargers. He beat that mark the following year after signing with the New Orleans Saints.
