Buffalo Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb left the team’s preseason game against the Washington Redskins with concussion-like symptoms. Kolb took a knee to the head at the end of a scramble in the first quarter and left the game shortly after. With E.J. Manuel already out for the remainder of the preseason, Buffalo was left with undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel under center, who went 10-for-17 for 62 yards as Washington won, 30-7. Bills blog Buffalo Rumblings has a recap of the game beyond the injuries. With two injured quarterbacks, the Bills will reportedly take a look at free agents Matt Leinart and John Beck.
NFL news roundup: Kevin Kolb, Mark Sanchez injured in preseason games
The injury bug is biting in the 2013 preseason, with both Kevin Kolb and Mark Sanchez suffering what could potentially be lasting injuries.
Carolina Panthers safety Colin Jones was fined $21,000 by the NFL for his hit on Chicago Bears long snapper Patrick Mannelly. The hit came during Carolina’s 24-17 win over Chicago in Week 1 of the preseason, and it left Mannelly with a fractured rib. Jones is appealing the fine. With the preseason seeing two fines already issued by the league, the upcoming season could see some heavy rule enforcement.
Though there’s no fine involved, Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly was flagged for a personal foul in the team’s preseason game against the Ravens. Cat Scratch Reader takes an incredibly detailed look at the hit and find out there might not be much there in the way of a foul.
Mark Sanchez injured his right shoulder late in the Jets’ preseason win over the Giants. In action after a three-interception performance from favored quarterback candidate Geno Smith, Sanchez had as good an opportunity as he’s seen this preseason at retaining his starting job. That opportunity appeared to be wasted as he left the game after just six pass attempts, though that was enough time to fumble a snap. In their thoughts on the game, Jets blog Gang Green Nation notes that the QB position is “just a disaster.”
Steelers linebacker Jarvis Jones was taken to a Pittsburgh-area hospital for chest evaluations after an apparent injury during his team’s game Saturday. Jones was reportedly wheeled out of the stadium on a stretcher. No further details were available on the injury as of Saturday night.
