NFL roster cuts: Ravens release 12 players, including Visanthe Shiancoe

Visanthe Shiancoe is not in the Ravens’ plans at tight end despite losing Dennis Pitta -- he’s among the players released by the Ravens Sunday.

NFL teams have to cut their rosters from 90 to 75 by Tuesday. The Ravens appear to be the first to make the requisite moves to head into the final week of their preseason. They released 12 players according to Jason Butt of Baltimore Beatdown, including tight end Visanthe Shiancoe, while adding a 13th to the injured reserve.

Shiancoe is certainly the most notable. The leading receiver for the Minnesota Vikings in terms of touchdowns in Brett Favre’s lone season with the club, Shiancoe had signed with Baltimore to provide depth after an injury to Dennis Pitta. However, they’d add Dallas Clark roughly two weeks later, and although Shiancoe made an impact in the preseason -- five catches for 48 yards -- it apparently wasn’t enough for the 11th-year veteran to stick.

Other notable cuts include Ramon Harewood, who started five games at left guard last season but has missed two full seasons due to injury out of three years in the NFL, wide receiver Tommy Streeter, a sixth-round pick last year, and Bryan Hall, who Wilson reports lost 55 pounds so the Ravens could play him at linebacker instead of defensive end.

The team moved linebacker Adrian Hamilton to injured reserve, which keeps him off the team’s roster ledger. Also cut were cornerback Moe Lee, running back Damien Berry, wide receivers Rashaad Carter and Gerrard Sheppard, outside linebacker Meshak Williams, offensive linemen Jack Cornell and David Mims and defensive lineman Will Pericak,

The team added quarterback Dayne Crist with backup Tyrod Taylor dealing with concussion symptoms, so their roster currently stands at 78, leaving them three more cuts to make.
