Colt McCoy trade rumors: 49ers calling teams, according to report

McCoy’s career in San Francisco looks to be over before it ever started.

Having just signed Seneca Wallace earlier in the week, the San Francisco 49ers are looking to part ways with quarterback Colt McCoy. The team is preparing to trade him, and has begun shopping him around the league, according to Ian Rapoport. The 49ers will reportedly release McCoy if they can find no takers in a trade.

After arriving from the Cleveland Browns as part of a trade this offseason, McCoy was thought to be locked in as Colin Kaepernick's backup. After two disappointing outings in preseason play, however, the former third-round pick and Texas Longhorns star clearly fell out of favor with the 49ers. They signed Wallace out of free agency on Thursday, a warning signal that McCoy was likely on his way out.

McCoy went 6-for-13 for just 76 yards and two interceptions in preseason outings against the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs.

As David Fucillo of Niners Nation points out, a move by the team will likely occur soon.

The 49ers first roster cuts are due by Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. PT. If the 49ers are intent on unloading Colt McCoy, it makes sense to get it done sooner rather than later. It gives them a much-needed spot among the 75, and it gives McCoy time to potentially sign with a team before the final week of preseason games.

The Cleveland Browns drafted McCoy with the 85th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. He played in 24 games over three seasons.
