Stevie Brown injury: Giants S has torn ACL, per report

The knee injury Brown suffered on Saturday night appears to be worse than first reported.

It appears the New York Giants' worst fears concerning safety Stevie Brown's knee injury have been realized. Brown tore his ACL during the Giants' overtime loss to the New York Jets on Saturday night, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Brown went down awkwardly after attempting to cut while returning a first half interception, a satirical reward for making a nice play on a pass from Jets quarterback Geno Smith. The injury looked bad from the beginning, with Brown being carried the field by medical personnel. The team initially called the injury a sprain, but an MRI has reportedly revealed more severe damage.

The fourth-year vet was an integral part of a Giants defense that forced 21 interceptions in 2012, nabbing eight of those himself. Having bounced through three teams in his first three years, including the Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders, Brown seemed to have found a home in the Giants secondary, where he was expected to play an important reserve role behind starter Antrel Rolle.

The Giants are already thin at the safety position. Rolle was also sidelined during Saturday's exhibition, but is expected to return in time for the regular season. Will Hill will miss the season's first four games after being suspended for violations of the league's substance abuse policy.
