Mark Sanchez injury: Jets QB won’t play final preseason game

Mark Sanchez won’t play in Thursday’s preseason finale, but he appears to have avoided a major shoulder injury. He is considered day-to-day.

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has an injured right shoulder and will not play in Thursday's preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles, the team confirmed on Twitter. The team hasn't specified what kind of injury Sanchez has, but he avoided a broken collarbone and is considered day-to-day.

Gang Green Nation: Geno has a lot to learn

Sanchez left Saturday's game against the New York Giants with the injury. His shoulder was wrapped and he was taken to the locker room for further evaluation. Head coach Rex Ryan faced intense criticism after the game for putting in Sanchez during the fourth quarter behind the second-team offensive line.

Does Sanchez need to play? SB Nation’s Gang Green Nation says no.

I’m not sure the Jets necessarily need to see Sanchez to play. They know what they have in him. We have seen this preseason that he still is essentially the same player he has always been. As much as certain writers have made his injury out to be as devastating as Aaron Rodgers going down for the Packers, this ship was going down faster than the Titanic anyway if success depended on Sanchez playing well.

Rookie Geno Smith will likely get the start on Thursday, but it looks like he lost the quarterback competition after a dismal performance Saturday. If Sanchez's shoulder heals in time, he is expected be the regular-season starter.
