Colt McCoy leading candidate for 49ers backup quarterback job

McCoy was a part of trade rumors Sunday, but the 2010 third-round pick restructured his deal over the weekend and appears to have won the backup job.

Colt McCoy will likely be the San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback behind Colin Kaepernick, according to Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee. McCoy also reportedly restructured his contract Saturday night, just two days after the Niners signed Seneca Wallace.

Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh expressed his confidence in McCoy Sunday night after a 34-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. “I feel real good that Colt’s the backup,” Harbaugh said.

This news comes on the same day a report surfaced stating that the Niners were looking to trade McCoy. The report went on to say that San Francisco planned to release the young quarterback if there were no takers for a deal.

The Niners received McCoy this offseason in a trade with the Cleveland Browns, and he initially seemed like a shoe-in for the backup quarterback job. However, the 2010 third-round pick struggled during his first two preseason outings, which led to the signing of Wallace.

McCoy completed just 6-of-13 passes for 76 yards and two interceptions in the first two games of preseason, but he showed some improvement against Minnesota. While McCoy did throw an interception, he completed 11-of-15 passes for 109 yards and led San Francisco on one touchdown drive.
