Colt McCoy trade rumors: 49ers QB backed by Jim Harbaugh

McCoy dealt with rumors last week, but after a strong showing he’s firmly entrenched on the roster.

There has been plenty of talk that the San Francisco 49ers want to trade backup quarterback Colt McCoy. Things have apparently changed, however, after the 49ers beat the Minnesota Vikings, 34-14, Sunday night.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh feels pretty comfortable with McCoy, according to CSN Bay Area, and has named him Colin Kaepernick's backup for the upcoming season.

“I feel real good about Colt as the backup quarterback,” Harbaugh said on Sunday night at Candlestick Park.

“He reiterated that to me, too,” McCoy said.

San Francisco had plenty of options to choose from when it comes to the second-string quarterback, with Seneca Wallace and B.J. Daniels also on the roster. McCoy has been with the team throughout the entirety of training camp, however, while Wallace was signed only last week.

David Fucillo of Niners Nation isn’t totally convinced that McCoy is safe, despite what Harbaugh said.

This has everybody jumping on this as news that he is naming McCoy the backup QB. It is possible Colt McCoy will head into Week 1 of the regular season with that job, but this seems to fit into Coach Harbaugh’s occasionally random musings that are not always quite what we think they are.

McCoy struggled in the preseason with very inconsistent performances: Against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2, McCoy barely moved the offense and threw an ugly interception deep in his own territory to Sean Smith. McCoy rebounded against Minnesota, however, completing 11 of his 15 passes for 109 yards -- though that included an interception.
