Chargers release Deon Butler, 9 others

San Diego started making its mandatory cuts on Sunday night, working its way toward the final roster.

Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

The San Diego Chargers started making cuts on Sunday, according to SB Nation's Bolts From The Blue. Teams need to get their rosters down to 75 players before Tuesday afternoon's deadline.

Of the 10 players the Chargers released on Sunday, wide receiver Deon Butler is likely the only name most NFL fans would recognize. First-time general manager Tom Telesco gave Butler his walking papers, but the move was not all that surprising considering San Diego's depth at the receiver position with Malcom Floyd, Vincent Brown, Robert Meachem, Eddie Royal, Seyi Ajirotutu and Keenan Allen.

Bolts from the Blue: 'No real surprises on the list'

Nine other players were also sent packing, including running back Edwin Baker, tight end Dallas Walker, quarterback Nathan Enderle, center Colin Baxter, guard Brandyn Dombrowski, punter Richard Kent, defensive lineman Jamarkus McFarland, safety Tony Burnett and cornerback Greg Brown.

John Gennaro of Bolts From The Blue expected these moves to be made.

No real surprises on the list, but I was hoping that Baxter and Walker could stick around. Also, Tony Burnett is a fun follow on Twitter. Maybe he’ll end up on the practice team.

San Diego still needs to make five cuts before Tuesday afternoon to get down to 75 players.
