Jets release Joe McKnight, 13 others

Believe it or not, the Jets actually have players other than Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez. They cut 14 of them on Sunday.

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Jets made 14 roster cuts on Sunday, leaving them one player over the 75-man roster limit that must be reached by Tuesday afternoon. Among those given their walking papers was veteran running back Joe McKnight, according to the team's official website.

McKnight was with the Jets since 2010 and many believed he could develop as a nice back and kick returner. McKnight’s career never really got going, however. His most productive year was last season as he stayed on the field for 15 games and rushed for six yards per carry, gaining 179 yards in the process.

David Wyatt of Gang Green Nation had hopes for McKnight, but isn’t upset to see him move on:

McKnight was a former high school stud and was recruited heavily into the USC program. however he never fulfilled the potential. Constantly battling injuries and fumble problems, he was never the next Reggie Bush as he was tipped to be.

New York made other cuts as well, releasing fellow running back Chad Spann, offensive linemen Patrick Ford, Trey Gilleo and Stephen Peterman, wide receivers Joe Collins, Marcus Rucker, K.J. Stroud and Rahsaan Vaughn, linebacker Sean Progar-Jackson, defensive backs Donnie Fletcher and Bret Lockett, punter Ryan Quigley and long snapper Patrick Scales.
