Saints vs. Texans 2013: Houston defense ‘looks silly’ in loss

Houston fell in the third preseason contest to the Saints. It’s never a good thing when Luke McCown helps make the defense look silly.

The Houston Texans fell to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at Reliant Stadium, dropping a 31-23 decision at home.

Houston had some good moments, taking an early 10-0 lead over a porous defense. Quarterback Matt Schaub also played very well with 213 passing yards while Ben Tate rushed for 74 yards on just 11 carries. There were some very bad times for the Texans, too.

Drew Brees only tossed six passes for New Orleans, yet he racked up 104 yards and a touchdown thanks to some bad tackling and loose coverage. Houston also fumbled the ball three times, but was lucky enough to recover each time.

Over at Battle Red Blog, there was talk about some of the poor defense that was on display after Houston raced to a 10-0 lead:

The Saints would strike back with a 51-yard Drew Brees to Pierre Thomas reception, with an assist by Shiloh Keo who missed his tackle on Thomas and took out Joe Mays, his Texans teammate. A pair of 50-plus yard field goals were exchanged by Fat Randy Bullock and Garrett Hartley, but then Brees left the game and the Saints took over.

Kenny Stills, with help from backup quarterback Luke McCown, made both Kareem Jackson and Johnathan Joseph look silly as the Saints took a 17-13 lead.

The Texans should be feeling pretty good about their preseason overall, however, especially without Arian Foster in the lineup due to a strained calf. Outside of Foster, the team has managed to stay remarkably healthy.

Houston wraps up its preseason schedule on Thursday opposing Tony Romo, Dez Bryant and the Dallas Cowboys on the road.
