Kirk Cousins confident he’ll be ready for Redskins opener

Kirk Cousins is confident he will be ready for Week 1. Redskins breathe a sigh a relief knowing they are no longer one step away from starting Rex Grossman.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Kirk Cousins apparently isn't worried about his availability for the Washington Redskins' season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. When asked if had any doubts if can play Week 1 after suffering a foot injury in preseason, Cousins replied "none at all," the team tweeted Monday.

Cousins suffered the injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers, starting in place of Robert Griffin III who is still recovering from a torn ACL. Thankfully, an MRI revealed no ligament damage, which is good news for the Redskins' depth chart. Otherwise, the team would be dangerously close to playing Rex Grossman, and no one in Washington D.C. wants to see that (though everybody else wouldn't mind).

Cousins played well when called up in place of an injured Griffin last season, and had shined in preseason until his injury. In Week 1, he went 6-of-7 passing for 52 yards and a touchdown. He should be a suitable backup once Griffin is healthy. Down the line, the Redskins may be hoping to groom Cousins into trade bait for a team in desperate of a starting quarterback.
