Jay Ratliff injury: Cowboys DL could miss season opener

Jay Ratliff’s recovery from a hamstring injury has not gone as planned for the Cowboys.

Jay Ratliff could miss the Dallas Cowboys' season opener with a lingering hamstring injury, the Forth Worth Star-Telegram reports. Ratliff has been on the physically unable to perform list since the start of training camp after straining his hamstring during his team conditioning test. His recovery has lasted longer than the Cowboys expected.

Ratliff has not been able to practice this week, prompting owner/general manager Jerry Jones to confirm that the nose tackle's status for Week 1 against the New York Giants is in doubt. Via the Star-Telegram:

"There are areas that none of us know other than to see how it's feeling on a day-to-day basis and where his strength is," Jones said after Saturday's victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. "Not necessarily how it is feeling [but what his strength is]. Ratliff will play on one leg. He will. There's no question about that. He'll do it, and do it competitively.

"But the bottom line is that we just don't know how he's going to measure up with the symptoms and how wise that is to play him or not play him and get more out of him later on down the road."

Cowboys blog Blogging The Boys recently gave its look at the projected 53-man roster, and Tom Ryle left Ratliff off the list completely under suspicion that Ratliff will still be on the PUP list when the season opens. If that's the case, Ratliff would be forced to miss the Cowboys' first six games of the season. Sean Lissemore could see extensive playing time as a result, as well as reserve defensive tackle Nick Hayden.
