Cliff Avril injury: Seahawks DE re-aggravates hamstring injury

Seattle may have to wait even longer for Cliff Avril to make his Seahawks debut.

USA TODAY Sports

Cliff Avril re-aggravated his hamstring injury and now his status for the season opener is in question. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Avril re-aggravated the injury during practice last week, via Eric Williams of the Tacoma News Tribune.

Avril missed the majority of training camp due to a hamstring injury and only returned to practice for a short period before having more issues. Carroll said there is currently no timetable for Avril to return. Whether or not Avril is able to play in Seattle’s season-opener against Carolina will depend on the severity of the most recent injury. Hamstring injuries typically heal only with rest and can cost a player a week or several months. Carroll was noncommittal when asked if Avril would play in Week 1.

“We don’t know if he’s going to be ready,” Carroll said, via the Seattle Times. “We don’t know that right now.”

When the Seahawks signed Avril to a two-year deal this offseason, it gave them a stable of pass rushers. That depth, however, is in serious question for the start of the season. Bruce Irvin is suspended for the first four games of the year while the statuses of Avril and Chris Clemons are unknown due to injuries. Benson Mayowa, an undrafted free agent from Idaho, could potentially see significant time for Seattle until Avril and Clemons return.

The 27-year-old Avril is coming off three straight seasons with at least 8.5 sacks. He signed a two-year deal this offseason.
