The Associated Press is reporting that Floyd practiced today, taking reps with the first team. He caught passes from quarterback Philip Rivers, which is a positive sign for a team in dire need of offensive help.
The team has struggled to offer good targets for its quarterbacks during preseason, with only tight ends Ladarius Green and Antonio Gates looking like reliable deep threats. The remainder of receivers either underperformed or are still developing, as in the case of rookie Keenan Allen.
Floyd became a full-time starter in 2012, when he caught 56 passes for 814 yards and five touchdowns. The hope was that a combination of Floyd and Danario Alexander could be relied on while Allen developed, but Alexander tore his ACL during practice and his future in San Diego is in question. First-year head coach Mike McCoy has a mountain to climb and things won't be as easy on offense as they were for him last year as the offensive coordinator in Denver, where he was able to lean on Peyton Manning.
