Henry Melton injury: Bears DL expected back for season opener

The Bears star defensive lineman should be back in action on Sept. 8.

Jonathan Daniel

Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman says defensive lineman Henry Melton is recovering nicely from his concussion, and is thought to be on pace for the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Trestman added Melton has been running and will continue to do so, per the piece:

“Henry ran today. He’s going to run tomorrow and Wednesday and pick up that running significantly.”

Melton sustained the injury during the first preseason game, forcing him to sit out in last week's victory over the Oakland Raiders and the week prior. Melton, alongside future Hall of Famer Julius Peppers, forms a nice wall up front for the modern day Monsters of the Midway.

In his three-year career, Melton has established himself as one of the best defensive tackles in the game. Last year, he recorded a career-high 44 tackles and registered six sacks.

Trestman says very few starters will play in the preseason finale versus the Cleveland Browns, so even if Melton was 100 percent it's likely he wouldn't see any action.
