Mark Sanchez injury: Jets QB hopes to return for Week 1

The former USC star is looking to make his comeback on Sept. 8 for the season opener.

After being knocked out of last Saturday night's game against the New York Giants with a shoulder injury, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is hoping to return by Week 1, according to the New York Daily News.

Sanchez, who was hit by Marvin Austin after being inserted into the lineup during the fourth quarter, looked seriously hurt as he went to the MetLife Stadium turf, holding his throwing shoulder. However, he's been ruled as day-to-day but will not play in the preseason finale, no matter how badly Rex Ryan wants to win. Per the piece:

“That’s the goal, so (we’ll) just keep our fingers crossed and take it day to day,” Sanchez said. “I’m obviously not happy that I’m hurt. I felt like I was putting together a good camp. So it’s an unfortunate thing, but there’s no time to gripe about it, you just gotta rehab as hard as I can.”

Going forward, no starter has been named between Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith, who threw three interceptions and ran out of the back of the end zone in the Jets' win over the Giants in the Snoopy Bowl.

Sanchez was 5 of 6 for 72 yards before being taken out of the contest.
